Iaido
The Art of Sword Drawing — Muso-Shinden-Ryu. Colorado's first Iaido school.
In 1975, Iwakabe Sensei returned to Japan to study Iaido from Master Danzaki Tomoaki, 9th Dan Hanshi. Two years later, Iwakabe Sensei began teaching Muso-Shinden-Ryu Iaido at Rocky Mountain Budokan, establishing it as Colorado's first Iaido school.
Iaido is the meditative art of sword drawing — the practice of drawing the Japanese sword (katana), cutting, cleaning the blade, and returning it to the scabbard in fluid, controlled movements. Unlike Kendo, which involves sparring with bamboo swords, Iaido is practiced solo with real or practice swords, emphasizing precise technique, mental focus, and spiritual development.
Muso-Shinden-Ryu is one of the most widely practiced styles of Iaido, with a lineage stretching back centuries. At Rocky Mountain Budokan, the art is taught with strict adherence to traditional Japanese customs and formalities.
Classes are available for students ages 15 and older. Iwakabe Sensei holds a 6th Dan in Iaido, and instructor Monica Iwakabe holds a Rokudan (6th Dan) in Iaido.
