Shotokan Karate
The foundation of Rocky Mountain Budokan since 1965.
Shotokan Karate has been the cornerstone of Rocky Mountain Budokan since its founding in 1965 by Mr. Hideki Iwakabe, 8th Dan. Iwakabe Sensei began teaching Shotokan Karate in 1958 and brought the art to Englewood, Colorado, establishing what would become the city's first and oldest karate school.
Shotokan Karate emphasizes powerful, linear techniques and deep stances rooted in centuries of Japanese tradition. The training develops not only physical strength and technique but also mental discipline, respect, and the spirit of Bushido — the code of ethical conduct of the Samurai warrior based on personal valor, honesty, integrity, and patience.
The customs and formalities during all classes are upheld in the ancient Japanese traditions. Students learn proper etiquette, bowing, and the importance of manners alongside their physical training. Character improvement through martial arts practice is the ultimate goal.
Iwakabe Sensei's extensive credentials include hand-to-hand combat training for law enforcement personnel and the Army's 101st Airborne Division. He continues to teach in numerous recreational and intramural programs throughout the Rocky Mountain region.
