Kendo

Japanese Fencing — Colorado's first Kendo school, established 1973.

Kendo students at Rocky Mountain Budokan with Japanese and American flags

In 1973, Kendo became incorporated at Rocky Mountain Budokan when Iwakabe Sensei became acquainted with Mr. Hiroshi Umemoto, 7th Dan Kyoshi Kendo Instructor. With Umemoto Sensei as Chief Advisor and Instructor of Kendo, Iwakabe Sensei soon became Head Instructor and organized the Rocky Mountain Kendo/Iaido Federation.

Kendo, or "the Way of the Sword," is the art of Japanese fencing practiced with bamboo swords (shinai) and protective armor (bogu). It develops focus, respect, and decisive action through rigorous training rooted in the traditions of the Samurai.

Classes are available for students ages 10 and older. The customs and formalities during all Kendo classes are upheld in the ancient Japanese traditions, building character and discipline alongside physical skill.
